The philosophy of cynicism - William D. Desmond

Explore the ancient Greek philosophy of cynicism, which calls for the rejection of materialism and conformity in favor of a simple life. In the 4th century BCE, a young Diogenes of Sinope was found to be counterfeiting coins. He was stripped of his citizenship, his money, all his possessions and sent into exile. He decided he would live self-sufficiently, close to nature, without materialism, vanity, or conformity and only then could he be truly free. William D. Desmond details how Diogenes gave rise to the philosophy of cynicism. Lesson by William D. Desmond, directed by Avi Ofer. The Philosopher Who Urinated On People | DIOGENES

Diogenes strongly opposed social values and institutions, because, according to him, these are at odds with human nature. He believed that human society infused us with all kinds of unnatural desires that are not only obsolete but also prevent us from being happy. Therefore, we should strip ourselves of these corrupting man-made constructs, so we’re able to live how we’re supposed to live: in agreement with nature. Diogenes’ stance toward everything cultured was very obvious. He practiced what he preached, behaving obscenely, with no regard for convention. It’s no surprise that people called him ‘doggish’, dog-like, or simply ‘the dog’. This video explores Diogenes’ philosophy, and what we can learn from his ideas. How Philosophers Handle Rejection (Diogenes, Schopenhauer, Epictetus & Zhuangzi)

Many people fear being rejected because they experience it as painful. As a result, they avoid situations in which they could be rejected. And so, they rather not apply for jobs that might be out of their league, avoid asking out a romantic interest when there’s a possibility of refusal (which is always the case), and never ask friends to hang out as they might turn down the offer. But when we fear rejection, what do we fear? Is it the disapproval from other people? And if so, why do we care so much about that? Or could it be that we fear the idea of being inadequate? How to get over rejection? This video explores the experience of rejection and how philosophers (Diogenes, Schopenhauer, Epictetus & Zhuangzi) handle rejection. Alexander and Diogenes "the Cynic" - Alexander the Great Ep.08 - See U in History

Ancient History: The meeting of Diogenes of Sinope and Alexander the Great #GreekMythology #Mythology #SeeUinHistory #History #MythologyExplained

Diogenes of Sinope (404-323 BC) Cynicism

🤍 While Diogenes was relaxing in the sunlight in the morning, Alexander, thrilled to meet the famous philosopher, asked if there was any favour he might do for him. Diogenes replied, "Yes, stand out of my sunlight". Alexander then declared, "If I were not Alexander, then I should wish to be Diogenes." When Plato is asked what sort of man Diogenes is, he responds, "A Socrates gone mad" He is labeled mad for acting against convention, but Diogenes points out that it is the conventions which lack reason. Diogenes is a harsh critic of Plato, regularly disparaging Plato's metaphysical pursuits and thereby signaling a clear break from primarily theoretical ethics. One guiding principle is that if an act is not shameful in private, that same act is not made shameful by being performed in public. For example, it was contrary to Athenian convention to eat in the marketplace, and yet there he would eat for, as he explained when reproached, it was in the marketplace that he felt hungry. The most scandalous of these sorts of activities involves his indecent behavior in the marketplace (masturbation), to which he responded "he wished it were as easy to relieve hunger by rubbing an empty stomach" iogenes is clearly contentious, but he is so for the sake of promoting reason and virtue. In the end, for a human to be in accord with nature is to be rational, for it is in the nature of a human being to act in accord with reason. Diogenes has trouble finding such humans, and expresses his sentiments regarding his difficulty theatrically. Diogenes is reported to have "lit a lamp in broad daylight and said, as he went about, 'I am searching for a human being'" (Diogenes Laertius, Lives of Eminent Philosophers, Book 6, Chapter 41). As a homeless and penniless exile, Diogenes experienced the greatest misfortunes of which the tragedians write, and yet he insisted that he lived the good life: "He claimed that to fortune he could oppose courage, to convention nature, to passion reason" "Diogenes, when asked from what country he came, replied, "I am a citizen of the world"

Diogenes Syndrome - Living in Squalor - Mental Health Documentary

Diogenes syndrome is a mental disorder in which people become socially withdrawn, neglect themselves and live in extreme squalor, usually with a total lack of concern at how they are living. They accumulate mountains of rubbish either by compulsive hoarding or by just not throwing anything away. They neglect their personal hygiene and physical health, not washing for months or years and they won’t go anywhere near a doctor. The accumulation of waste can lead to infestation by rats and other vermin, and this may finally force them into contact with public health services. The term Diogenes Syndrome was proposed in 1975 after the ancient Greek philosopher Diogenes of Sinope, but this is something of misnomer. It was originally described in older people - some cases have a long history of a subclinical personality disorder, others, the early signs of dementia. It can also in younger people with schizophrenia, depression and obsessive compulsive disorder. References Ashworth, F., Rose, A., and Wilson, B. A. (2018).

Diogenes - the Cynic

Diogenes was one of the founders of Cynicism. A philosophy that would later turn into stoicism by people like Marcus Aurelius, Zeno and Epictetus. Rather than writing abstract papers or engaging in lofty discussions, he tried to live out his philosophy and use his wits to point out the stupidity of his fellow-men. Diogenes was a bit of a comic, might have been an manly version of MGTOW, and by all accounts was definitely based.

Diogenes - Quotes That Help You Understand The Life Better

Diogenes of Sinope (l. c. 404-323 BCE) was a Greek Cynic philosopher best known for holding a lantern (or candle) to the faces of the citizens of Athens claiming he was searching for an honest man. He rejected the concept of "manners" as a lie and advocated complete truthfulness at all times and under any circumstance. He was most likely a student of the philosopher Antisthenes (l. 445-365 BCE, who studied with Socrates) and, in the words of Plato (allegedly), was “A Socrates gone mad.” He was driven into exile from his native city of Sinope for defacing currency (though some sources say it was his father who committed the crime and Diogenes simply followed him into exile). He made a home for himself in Athens in the agora, living in a rain barrel and surviving off gifts from admirers, foraging, and begging. Diogenes famous "search for an honest man" was his way of exposing the hypocrisy and sham of polite societal conventions. By holding a literal light up to people's faces in broad daylight, he forced them to recognize their participation in practices that prevented them from living truthfully. He inspired others to follow his example, most notably Crates of Thebes (l. c. 360 - 280 BCE) who studied with him. Diogenes is still highly regarded in the present day for his commitment to truth and living according to his beliefs. Quotes by Diogenes which tells a lot about life and ourselves.
