'Footage Emerges of BRUTAL Clash on India-China Border' Footage has emerged of a clash between Indian and Chinese soldiers at the disputed Himalayan border between the two countries. It comes days after a fist-fight broke out in the Tawang sector of the northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh when Chinese troops allegedly crossed into Indian territory. India and China claim vast swathes of each other's territory along their Himalayan border. It erupted in a deadly war in 1962. And although a truce is in place with a “Line of Actual Control,” the border remains disputed. On June 15th, tensions along the border turned violent for the first time in over half a century. India says at least 20 of its soldiers were killed after hand-to-hand fighting with Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley. China has not released any information on casualties. India and China traded accusations that the other had violated their shared de facto border. But analysts say the violence speaks to a bigger geopolitical issue. Emanuela Campanella explains. India China Tawang Fight LIVE News: Indian and Chinese troops clashed along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Tawang sector of Arunachal Pradesh on December 9, the Indian Army said in a statement. Both Indian and Chinese soldiers suffered 'minor injuries' due to the face-off, the Army said. Over 200 Chinese soldiers carrying spiked clubs and sticks clashed with Indian soldiers in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang sector, a source told news agency PTI. The injuries on the Chinese side could be higher. However, no official confirmation on the same is awaited. In November 1996, India and China signed an agreement that bars soldiers from both sides from using firearms along the Line of Actual Control, the so-called border. In May, 2020 PLA crossed the border with India and occupied strategic locations. Since then both countries are locked in a stand-off and deployed thousands of troops and arms and artillery along the border. Much of the military-related infrastructure of China was built near the LAC shortly after August 5, 2019, when India divided Indian administered-Kashmir into the federally governed union territories of Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir. China says Ladakh is a disputed territory and the decision undermined its territorial sovereignty. Using 15 different techniques borrowed from Israeli and Japanese martial arts, Indian soldiers guarding the border with China are undergoing special training for hand to hand combat. India felt the need to train its soldiers in hand-to-hand combat after the Chinese PLA in June 2020 used nail-studded rods and clubs wrapped with barbed wire to hunt down Indian soldiers in Galwan valley in Ladakh in high Himalayas. At least 20 Indian soldiers were killed in that clash and over 1000 square kilometres of territory was grabbed by the Chinese PLA without firing a bullet. The PLA continued its expansionist plans along the Indian border and when resisted they pushed back Indian soldiers using hand-to-hand combat. The trainee soldiers form two groups and simulate the violent clashes that took place along the LAC. They use punches and kicks to debilitate the adversary by attacking their groins or other weaker areas of the body. And if the clashes turn violent, these Indian soldiers are being trained in using nail-studded rods, baseball bats, clubs wrapped with barbed wire, or knives to attack. In a first such incident since Galwan clashes, Indian and Chinese troops clashed in Arunachal Pradesh on the night of December 9. On Dec 9 Indian and Chinese troops got into a skirmish on the border of India’s northeastern Arunachal Pradesh state with China - the eastern sector of the long and in many places disputed Himalayan border. As previously in 2020, this skirmish did not involve firearms, but no less brutal hand-to-hand combat with weapons like wooden clubs embedded with nails. In this new clash there were reported injuries, but no deaths. In this episode on the volatile Himalayan border, Nirmal Ghosh hosts Dr Manoj Joshi, a Distinguished Fellow at the Observer Research Foundation (ORF) in New Delhi and author of a new book Understanding the India-China Border: The Enduring Threat of War in High Himalaya; and Dr Aparna Pande, a scholar of Indian and South Asian foreign policy, and Director of the Initiative on the Future of India and South Asia, at the Hudson Institute in Washington DC. 00:00 Highlights (click/tap above): 2:08 This time, very clearly, the Chinese came up with a plan. They had an extraordinarily large number in their patrol. This was not just a patrol. Indian and Chinese troops clashed in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang sector in the early hours of December 9, beating each other up with sticks and canes in their closest encounter since the deadly Galwan incident in eastern Ladakh in June 2020. The Defence Minister told Lok Sabha that on December 9, PLA troops carried out an incursion across the LAC in Yangtse area of Tawang sector in Arunachal Pradesh, and attempted to unilaterally change the status quo. Indian troops resisted this attempt by China “with firmness”, and there was a scuffle in this faceoff. “Our Army with great bravery stopped the PLA incursion and forced them to return to their post,” the Defence Minister said. China and India the world's two most populous nations. They are currently in a tense face-off in the Himalayas. India and China share a border more than 3,440km long and there are areas which both the countries claim are theirs. The border patrol often bump into each other and sometimes have scuffles but both sides have insisted that since 40 years no bullet has been fired. The poorly demarcated Line of Actual Control (LAC) separates the two countries. The LAC can shift as there are rivers, lakes and snow-capped mountains so the soldiers often come close to confrontation. Officials have said thousands of Chinese troops have forced their way into the Galwan valley in Ladakh. Chinese forces put up tents, dug trenches. It also moved heavy equipment several kilometres inside India’s territory. This is because India built roads and bridges in the area which are a hundred kilometres long. Ajai Shukla, Indian military expert who was a colonel in the army said, "The normally peaceful Galwan River has now become a hotspot because the LAC is closest to the new road India has built. If there is a conflict, this road could increase India’s capability to move men and material quickly. The situation is serious. The Chinese have come into a territory which they themselves accepted as part of India. It has completely changed its view.”India's decision to build such a road and make changes in the infrastructure has angered China. Reports in the Indian media said soldiers from the two sides clashed on two occasions in Ladakh. The current military tension is in Ladakh and also in Naku La, the border between China and Sikkim. China has a different view; Chinese Global Times said, “The Galwan Valley region is Chinese territory, and the local border control situation was very clear."Dr Long Xingchun, president of the Chengdu Institute of World Affairs (CIWA) said, "According to the Chinese military, India has entered into the Galwan valley. So, China is angry.” Tensions between India and China have been rising for a long time now. When India decided to convert Jammu and Kashmir into a Union territory and make Ladakh a separate UT, it made changes to the map of the area. The new Ladakh included Aksai Chin, an area India which is India’s but is controlled by China. Additionally, China was unhappy when India initially banned all exports of medical and protective equipment as India was storing up its stocks after the coronavirus pandemic started. Former Indian diplomat P Stobdan, an expert in Ladakh and India-China affairs said, "We routinely see both armies crossing the LAC. It is common and such incidents are resolved at the local military level. But this time, the build-up is the largest ever seen.” The stand-off is happening in some important areas that are important for India. If Pangong Lake is taken, Ladakh can't be defended. If the Chinese military is allowed to settle in the valley of Shyok, then the Nubra valley and even Siachen can be reached."
