EU angered by Britain's plans for unilateral changes in post-Brexit trade rules | DW News

The British government on Monday introduced a bill to Parliament on amendments to the post-Brexit rules that govern trade with Northern Ireland. The European Union says it will respond with all measures at its disposal if Britain pushes ahead with unilateral changes to the Brexit deal on Northern Ireland. It has said any changes would breach international law. Following the announcement, the EU warned that it could launch "infringement procedures" against the UK. Earlier in the day, UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said London wanted a "negotiated solution" to the issue with Brussels and denied that the move was illegal. The UK government had remained quiet about the details of its plan but said they will be "lawful and correct." Johnson himself said the changes would help ease pro-British unionist concerns over the Brexit deal. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken urged the UK to continue "good-faith negotiations" with the EU in a call with Liz Truss later on Monday, the US State Department said. What changes have been mentioned? The proposed changes include the setting up of a "green channel" for goods moving from Britain to Northern Ireland that are destined to stay in the UK. Goods being sent further to the EU would be directed to a "red channel." The UK government has promised penalties for those who try to abuse the system and take advantage of the EU's single market from the UK. They are expected to eliminate European Union state aid rules on subsidies provided to businesses by public authorities in the province. UK government ministers have also previously said that they wish to no longer allow the European Court of Justice to be the sole arbiter of any disputes, arguing that British courts should have some role. EU launches legal action over UK's 'illegal' Protocol plans

Start your free trial now: 🤍 The European Union has announced it is launching fresh Brexit legal action against the UK as it claimed Boris Johnson's plans to unilaterally tear up parts of the Northern Ireland Protocol are "illegal". Maros Sefcovic, the vice president of the European Commission, said the Government's Northern Ireland Protocol Bill will break international law and "is extremely damaging to mutual trust and respect between the EU and the UK". He said the legislation has created "deep uncertainty and casts a shadow over our overall cooperation" and as a result the bloc is restarting the legal action it had paused last year while also bringing forward new legal proceedings. Speaking in Brussels, Mr Sefcovic said: "Let there be no doubt, there is no legal, nor political justification whatsoever for unilaterally changing an international agreement. Opening the door to unilaterally changing an international agreement is a breach of international law as well. So let’s call a spade a spade. This is illegal." The EU legal action relates to how the UK has implemented post-Brexit border rules and checks in Northern Ireland and it is not directly linked to the Government's new legislation. The Government has insisted its Northern Ireland Protocol Bill will be legal. EU demands UK drops Brexit bill or will sue Britain & end trade talks

The European Union has demanded that the UK government withdraws legislation which could break parts of the Withdrawal Agreement as Brussels threatens to walk out of Brexit trade talks. The European Commission warned Downing Street if the Internal Market Bill was not scrapped the EU would no longer negotiate with a trade deal with the UK and would sue Britain. However Minister for the Cabinet Office Michael Gove hit back at the EU’s demands. Mr Gove met his EU counterpart on Thursday to discuss the implementation of the Withdrawal Agreement. Both sides insisted on their position, with the EU saying they would go to court to prevent the UK from breaking any part of the Brexit treaty. The UK government says it is putting in place contingency planning in the event of a No Deal and that it was protecting Northern Ireland and the Good Friday Agreement. The two sides are in a war of words over a proposed law which would mean the UK government determines rules on state aid in Northern Ireland as opposed to Brussels, and that Northern Ireland businesses would not have to fill out export forms when sending goods to the UK. The European Union is insisting this would breach international law, and that if the legislation wasn’t shelved by the end of the month Brexit talks would be over. Germany’s ambassador to the United Kingdom tweeted in response to the bill: “In more than 30 years as a diplomat I have not experienced such a fast, intentional and profound deterioration of a negotiation.” From Brexit breaking news to HD movie trailers, The Sun newspaper brings you the latest news videos and explainers from the UK and around the world. EU sues Britain again, saying Northern Ireland bill erodes trust

24.07.2022

The European Commission launched four new legal procedures against Britain on Friday after the British parliament's lower house cleared a bill to scrap some of the rules governing post-Brexit trading arrangements for Northern Ireland. #eudebates the unique initiative aiming to promote debate, dialogue, knowledge, participation and communication among citizens. #Brexit #Ireland #UK #NI #NorthernIreland #Protocol #BrexitChaos The Commission, which oversees EU-UK relations, said Britain's unwillingness to engage in meaningful discussions on the protocol governing those trading arrangements, and the House of Commons' passage of the Northern Ireland Protocol bill, undermined a spirit of cooperation. It brings to seven the number of "infringement procedures" the European Commission has launched over what it sees as Britain's failure to respect Northern Ireland trade aspects of the Brexit divorce deal agreed by both sides. The procedures could result in the European Court of Justice (ECJ) imposing fines, although this would likely not happen for at least a year. The Commission said it stood ready to launch further procedures to protect the EU single market from British violations of the protocol. Britain said the EU action was "disappointing". "A legal dispute is in nobody's interest and will not fix the problems facing the people and businesses of Northern Ireland. The EU is left no worse off as a result of the proposals we have made in the Northern Ireland Protocol Bill," a government spokesperson said. TWO MONTHS TO RESPOND London has proposed scrapping some checks on goods from the rest of the United Kingdom arriving in the British province and challenged the role of the ECJ to decide on parts of the post-Brexit arrangement agreed by the EU and Britain. The four new legal procedures do not relate to Britain's new plans, but to the accusation that it has not implemented the protocol. Northern Ireland is in the EU single market for goods, meaning imports from the rest of the United Kingdom are subject to customs declarations and sometimes require checks on their arrival. The arrangement was set to avoid reinstating border controls between Northern Ireland and EU member Ireland, but has inflamed pro-British unionist parties by effectively creating a border in the Irish Sea. The Commission has charged Britain with failing to comply with customs requirements for goods moving from Northern Ireland to Britain, not transposing EU rules on excise duties in general and for alcohol and not implementing EU rules on sales tax for e-commerce. The Commission has given Britain two months to respond.

(4 Jun 2019) US President Donald Trump eased up on his frequent criticism of outgoing UK Prime Minister Theresa May over her handling of the tortured Brexit deal on Tuesday, as he declared that history will remember her fondly if the UK can successfully leave the European Union. Trump's unexpected compliments for May come just days before she was set to resign the leadership of her party after failing to secure a Brexit deal. May said she continued to believe the UK's best option was to leave the EU with a deal and there was a "good" one on the table, but added it was now an issue for her successor. The pair also joked about Trump's previous assertion that he would have sued the EU in order to resolve the negotiations. COVID-19: EU launches lawsuit against AstraZeneca over vaccine supply failures

The EU has launched legal action against AstraZeneca after Brussels accused the drug company of failing to supply enough COVID-19 vaccines to the bloc. The European Commission claims AstraZeneca failed to respect its contract with Brussels, which states the company would use “best reasonable efforts” to supply 180 million vaccine doses to the EU in the second quarter of this year. However in March AstraZeneca informed EU members it would only be able to deliver a third of what was agreed due to supply chain issues, leading to the start of legal action from Brussels. All 27 EU members have backed the lawsuit against the drugs giant, which also claims AstraZeneca failed to create a “reliable strategy to ensure timely delivery of doses”. The company denies breaking its contract with the EU, and has said they will supply over 50 million vaccine doses to the bloc by the end of April. The European Commission has been criticised for its slow vaccine rollout. Both Britain and America have inoculated over 50% of their populations, compared to just 21% in the EU. Leaders in Brussels blamed vaccine manufacturers for delays and supply shortages, and claimed that AstraZeneca vaccines meant for the EU were going to the UK. In March the CEO of AstraZeneca hit back at these suggestions, and said the British government had agreed its vaccine contract three months before the EU, meaning supply chain problems had been solved by the time the jab had been approved by regulators. The British government has defended the company for producing vaccines at cost and for creating a jab which can be stored at room temperature. Emmanuel Macron and other European leaders came under fire for raising doubts about the Oxford jab without evidence, which may have led to a lower uptake in vaccines amongst Europeans.
