And the first thing I try to figure out is what focal length people would need. More often than not, beginners have no idea how the focal length of a lens changes the look of an image. This chapter is meant to help you decide which lens you want to purchase. And after the first video, you should already have a good idea about what focal length you want to get.

Supplementary video of the computer animated model from the original research paper published in Clinical Ophthalmology "Computer-animated model of accommodation and theory of reciprocal zonular action" by Daniel B Goldberg. Read the original research article here: 🤍 Abstract: This report presents a computer-animated model of the structures of accommodation based on new understanding of the anatomy of the zonular apparatus integrated with current understanding of the mechanism of accommodation. Analysis of this model suggests a new, consolidated theory of the mechanism of accommodation including a new theory of reciprocal zonular action. A three-dimensional animated model of the eye in accommodation and disaccommodation was produced in collaboration with an experienced medical animator. Current understanding of the anatomy of the zonule and the attachments of the vitreous zonule to the anterior hyaloid membrane is incomplete. Recent studies have demonstrated three components of the vitreous zonule: (1) anterior vitreous zonule (previously "hyalocapsular" zonule), which attaches the ciliary plexus in the valleys of the ciliary processes to the anterior hyaloid membrane in the region medial to the ciliary body and Weiger's ligament; (2) intermediate vitreous zonule, which attaches the ciliary plexus to the anterior hyaloid peripherally; and (3) posterior vitreous zonule, which creates a sponge-like ring at the attachment zone that anchors the pars plana zonules. The pars plana zonules attach posteriorly to the elastic choroid above the ora serrata. Analysis of the computer-animated model demonstrates the synchronized movements of the accommodative structures in accommodation and disaccommodation. Utilizing model-based reasoning, it is shown that the posterior zonules attach to and provide traction to the anterior vitreous membrane and Weiger's ligament. This model supports the concept that the ciliary body/zonule/anterior hyaloid complex contributes to the changes in the posterior lens capsule during accommodation, supporting an extralenticular component to accommodation and demonstrating an alternative to the "vitreous support" theories. There is a reciprocal action of the anterior zonules and the posterior zonules. During ciliary body contraction, the anterior zonules lose tension while the posterior zonules stretch and exert force on the posterior lens capsule playing a role in shaping the posterior lens thickness and curvature. During ciliary body relaxation, the posterior zonules lose tension as the lens flattens and is pulled back by the increasing tension of the anterior zonules.

Multi Focal Lens Implant


Improved Lenses may Eliminate Need for Glasses Cataract removal is a safe and effective surgery, but many patients still depend on glasses afterward for reading. Recent advances in artificial intraocular lens (IOL) designs, however, may reduce or eliminate the need for glasses following surgery. The newer premium lenses enhance the optics of the eyes and make people less dependent on glasses, explains ophthalmologist Kevin Miller, M.D., one of the several physicians with the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA who provide the new lenses. Premium IOLs are designed to correct either astigmatism or presbyopia. Astigmatism-correcting lenses adjust for blurred vision resulting from an irregular-shaped cornea. Presbyopia-correcting lenses adjust for the inability of the eye to change focus. The decision to place a premium IOL, as opposed to a standard lens, is dictated by patient preference and preoperative clinical findings. The nature and scope of visual impairment before surgery is a good indicator as to the extent to which the lens will improve the quality of vision, Dr. Miller says. For example, with the astigmatism-correcting lens, patients must have enough astigmatism to justify placing it. For the presbyopia-correcting lens, patients must have decent visual potential. Currently, less than 10 percent of cataract surgery patients receive premium IOLs, but Dr. Miller expects that number to increase as the potential benefits become more widely known. While perfect vision is hard to achieve, the goal is to help patients see without glasses after surgery, Dr. Miller says. Learn more at 🤍

How did they shoot that? From the speed ramps to the morph zooms, there is a lot going on in this single-take fight scene, nicknamed the “Crazy Horse Shot.” In this 300 behind-the-scenes video, we’ll explain everything, including the ingenious idea Zack Snyder had to pull it off. Zack Snyder’s 300 is full of amazing shots, it is a feast of eye candy. And a lot can be analyzed and appreciated about the use of slow motion, the surreal comic book look, or the special effects that brought it all together. But during the 300 first battle, there is a moment that stands above the rest. The idea was to shoot a single-take fight but also include speed ramps and zooms in and out of the action. Trying to execute this ambitious shot in a “oner” would be extremely difficult, especially the timing and precision. So, why is it called the “Crazy Horse Shot”? Zack Snyder thought he might be able to use a camera rig that was also used in a TV movie called Crazy Horse. That rig consisted of two cameras (one shooting B&W, the other shooting color) that could capture the same exact image at the same time. This was done with a beam splitter, a prism that split light into two directions. But instead of two cameras, Snyder wanted three — each fitted with a different focal length lens. This way, they could capture three different shot sizes (wide, full, medium) at the same time. Then in post-production, they could time exactly when to zoom in and out between those shots. This technique is called a morph zoom (or nested zoom) because the transition between the shots had to be manufactured in editing. The basic anatomy of the eye and its ability to receive light is contrasted with the negative effects of a cataract lens. During a phacoemulsification, an ultrasound probe breaks the cloudy lens into tiny fragments. The fragments are vacuumed out through a tiny incision. I built a large format 3D camera! — 4x5 Stereographic photography with 19th century lenses


This is the third video in the series on building a large format 4x5 stereographic view camera. This video contains a lot of information so you can use the table of contents below to jump to topics in the video of interest. In the video, I'll discuss the camera build, how everything came out, the unique specifications of the camera and how they influence it's use, and different types of media that can be used (film, paper negatives, direct positives, glass plates, daguerreotype plates, etc). I'll also discuss in detail the lens spacing specifications that allow a scaled up stereo camera like this to work. Finally, I'll take you along as I make test stereo pairs with the camera using Harman Direct Positive Paper and we'll look at the pairs in the darkroom using an oversized mirror stereoscope.
